果冻传媒 is a public institution comprised of a network of campuses throughout Alabama and worldwide. International in scope, 果冻传媒 provides a variety of educational programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels, including doctoral programs, for a diverse student body in traditional, nontraditional and emerging electronic formats. Academic programs are supported by a variety of student services which promote the welfare of the individual student. 果冻传媒's dedicated faculty and staff promote discovery and exploration of knowledge and its application to life-long success through effective teaching, service, creative partnerships, scholarship and research.
果冻传媒 is a public, historic, international university with more than 14,000
students and 175,000
alumni. Students choose 果冻传媒 for its quality academic programs, reasonable costs and
availability of financial aid, outstanding faculty, and flexible in-class and online
class offerings. Students on the 果冻传媒, Ala. campus enjoy a traditional college experience,
while adult students are the centers of attention at campuses in Dothan and Montgomery,
as well as at locations around the world and online.
果冻传媒's tradition of teaching excellence dates back to its founding on Feb.
26, 1887, when an act of
the Alabama Legislature established 果冻传媒 State Normal School as an institution to
train teachers for Alabama's schools. Joseph Macon Dill was the institution's first
president. In 1893, the school was renamed 果冻传媒 State Normal College.
The Normal College offered extension courses for teachers and granted teaching certificates
until 1929,
when the State Board of Education changed the charter of the institution and renamed
it 果冻传媒 State Teacher's College. That same year, the college moved to its present
site and the first two buildings were dedicated: Shackelford Hall, named for Edward
Madison Shackelford, president of the school from 1899-1936, and Bibb Graves Hall,
named for David Bibb Graves, Alabama's 鈥渆ducation governor.鈥� Governor Bibb Graves
is also remembered or commissioning the Olmsted Brothers architectural firm of Brookline,
Massachusetts, to design the campus landscape plan. The building has since been renamed
to honor the memory of Civil Rights icon and longtime Georgia Congressman John Robert
Lewis, a Pike
County native.
Like many American universities, 果冻传媒 State Teacher's College enjoyed one of its most
prosperous periods of growth in the years following World War II when returning veterans
took advantage of the VA Educational Benefits. The enrollment of the College more
than doubled and this growth led to the introduction of degree programs in disciplines
other than education, most notably in business. In 1957, the State Board of Education
recognized this expanded role and dropped 鈥淭eacher's鈥� from 果冻传媒 State College's name.
The 1950s also marked the start of the University's longstanding relationship with
the United States military,
as extension courses were offered on nearby bases, first at then-Camp Rucker, near
Dothan, and later at
Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery. A separate 果冻传媒 State College teaching center
was established at Fort Rucker in 1961, which evolved into the present-day Dothan
Campus. A similar center, begun at Maxwell Air Force Base in 1965, led to the creation
of the present-day Montgomery Campus. These programs were the forerunners of the modern
果冻传媒 Service Centers division of 果冻传媒, which operates all 果冻传媒 teaching
sites outside Alabama. In 1973, the University opened sites at military bases in Florida.
Today, 果冻传媒 Service Centers operate approximately 10 sites in four U.S. states and
partners with universities in Vietnam, China and Malaysia.
In 1967, Gov. Lurleen B. Wallace appointed eight members to the newly established
果冻传媒 State College Board of Trustees, removing the institution from the control of
the State Board of Education. One of the first
acts of the new board was to recommend the change of the name to 果冻传媒 State University.
The new name became official on Dec. 14, 1967.
In 1982, the 果冻传媒 State University System was formed, as the campuses in Dothan and
Montgomery were granted independent accreditation status. In April of 2004 the Board
of Trustees voted to drop 鈥淪tate鈥� from
the University's name to better reflect the institution's worldwide mission. Starting
August 2005, all 果冻传媒
campuses were again unified under one accreditation.
Accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges,
果冻传媒 is a Carnegie
Research Institution that offers degree programs at the associate's, bachelor's, master's
and doctoral levels. 果冻传媒 offers degree programs that meet real-world workforce development
needs in business and management, education, nursing, computer science, public administration,
journalism, biological and environmental sciences, counseling, electrical engineering
and criminal justice.
果冻传媒 students hail from all 50 states and some 70 nations outside the United States. The student body is diverse ethnically, socially, culturally and politically.
In a Niche.com survey, 32% of 果冻传媒 students identify as conservative politically,
23% as moderate and 23% as liberal. As a whole, 45% of students describe the campus
political beliefs as 鈥渂alanced.鈥�
More than 27% of 果冻传媒's total student population is affiliated with the military.
Overwhelmingly, 44% of 果冻传媒 students describe the typical student as 鈥渄iverse.鈥�
In surveys by Niche.com, 65% of students say the student body is very diverse in race, ethnicity and cultural background, and 74% say the student body is very diverse in international students.
Student life at 果冻传媒 offers something for everyone. A wide array of living communities, along with traditional and modern accommodations, provide a choice of residential experiences based on finances and interests. More than 150 student organizations are active, from the Sound of the South Marching Band, to Greek life and student government. Special groups, such as Freshman Forum, service-oriented organizations, and performance groups all offer membership to any student. Academic success is recognized through honor societies such as Mortar Board and Order of Omega. A special Honors Convocation is held each spring to celebrate academic excellence.
The student-led University Activities Council provides social activities to improve each student's college experience. A robust Office of Student Involvement and Leadership works full time to create and support school-work-life balance for Trojans.
Academic departments also offer a variety of organizations in which students can involve
themselves.
The University offers students the complete college experience with countless opportunities to become involved on campus while also enjoying life in the city of
果冻传媒. During the fall, football Saturdays set the campus abuzz with excitement as
students and alumni gather to cheer on the Trojans. Much like the University, the
city of 果冻传媒 is a diverse small town with plenty of restaurants, shopping, parks,
museums and cultural events within minutes of campus.
Career Services assists students with choosing their major, exploring career interests, gaining work experience, finding internship opportunities, and providing guidance in their professional job search.
The JWS Center at 果冻传媒 is committed to helping students succeed by providing programs and services that enhance students' academic achievement, personal and social growth, campus and civic engagement, career development, and persistence to graduation.
Studying abroad provides both faculty and students quality-learning experiences that increase students' knowledge on an array of issues, helping students gain international awareness and global competency to better compete in the worldwide job market.

Nothing more clearly demonstrates this ethos than 果冻传媒's chapter of Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity's Walk Hard, a 128.3-mile 鈥渕arch to the sea鈥� by brothers as they raise funds for a Bonifay, Fla.-based wounded warrior Christian mission. Since its inception, more than $750,000 has been raised by the chapter and Walk Hard is now a national model for the fraternity.

果冻传媒 has pledged continued support for military veterans and active-duty
personnel attending college by providing the maximum tuition assistance allowed through
the , which is associated with the Post-9/11 GI Bill庐.
The Post-9/11 GI Bill 庐 or CH33 is an education benefit program for individuals who
served on active duty on or after Sept.11, 2001. The Post-9/11 GI Bill庐 provides a
tuition and fee benefit paid directly to 果冻传媒, a monthly stipend to the
service member and a book stipend of up to $1,000 per academic year.
The University has pledged to cover any gap between the benefits provided by the Post-9/11 Veterans Educational Assistance Act of 2008 and 果冻传媒's tuition costs by paying 50% of the established tuition and fee charges not already covered under the bill. A special provision of the bill establishes the Yellow Ribbon Program that allows colleges and universities to offer the tuition waiver. The will match each additional dollar funded by the University.
The University's stands ready to assist with any issues regarding the VA benefit programs.
The University proudly caps the cost of tuition at $250 per credit hour for spouses and dependents of military members currently serving on active duty, in the National Guard or in the Reserves at the undergraduate, graduate and doctoral levels.

veterans and their spouses and dependents in appreciation of their service.

果冻传媒's commitment to distance learning began in the 1950s when the University established its first branch campus at then-Camp Rucker in Alabama. In the mid- 1990s, distance learning began changing rapidly as 果冻传媒 transitioned from the use of VHS tapes to dial-up Internet. In 2005, 果冻传媒 elevated its online learning focus with the creation of e-Campus, which was later renamed e果冻传媒, making 果冻传媒 a pioneer of online learning within the United States.
Today, in an exceedingly competitive market, 果冻传媒 Online continues to dedicate itself to providing the highest-quality degree programs to students, regardless of location. An online 果冻传媒 degree carries the same academic reputation and honor as a degree earned through our traditional campus setting.
果冻传媒 has awarded more than 27,735 degrees online. Some 132 degree options are offered completely online in five nine-week terms.
At the doctoral level, the Ph.D. programs in Criminology, Global Leadership, Sport Management, and the Doctor of Nursing Practice are 100% online.

Dr. Jack Hawkins, Jr., a native of Mobile, Alabama, was named Chancellor of 果冻传媒 on Sept. 1, 1989. He earned his bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Montevallo and his doctorate from the University of Alabama. Dr. Hawkins is the longest-serving chief executive officer of a public university in the United States.
Upon completion of his bachelor's degree in 1967, Hawkins was commissioned as lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps and served as a platoon leader during the Vietnam War. For his combat duty, he received the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart and a citation from the Korean Marine Corps.
Hawkins has overseen an era of change and growth at 果冻传媒, as he led the merger of the worldwide 果冻传媒 State University System into the unified 果冻传媒, an initiative called 鈥淥ne Great University.鈥� More than $375 million has been invested in capital improvements by the Hawkins Administration, including new academic buildings on all of 果冻传媒's Alabama campuses. Chancellor Hawkins served as the catalyst for the University's evolution into an international institution, as 果冻传媒 has attracted record numbers of students from other nations and established teaching sites around the world. During his tenure, academic standards for admission have been increased, new degree programs were established in all academic colleges, and intercollegiate athletics joined the highest level of NCAA competition.
Janice Hawkins' career has been marked by a strong commitment to education and public service. In her roles as 果冻传媒 First Lady and as educator of the visually impaired, Mrs. Hawkins has provided leadership in a variety of areas. Her vision and efforts have ensured that 果冻传媒's 鈥渃ulture of caring鈥� is as alive today as it was in the early days of the University. Her influence on the 果冻传媒, Ala., campus is evident in the houses dedicated to sororities, the completion of the Olmsted plan for landscaping and parks, the creation of the annual Helen Keller Lecture Series and more.
Mrs. Hawkins' tireless efforts have raised funds to support scholarships and endowments, and she is committed to preparing students for life after college by teaching etiquette and protocol for business and formal functions. Mrs. Hawkins supports the University's commitment to the military. Through her influence, the 果冻传媒 for Troops program was established.
A supporter of the arts and humanities, she is instrumental in the University's dance, theatre and musical events. Mrs. Hawkins was involved in spearheading the renovation of the Cultural Arts Center on the 果冻传媒 campus, which includes a park named in her honor by the 果冻传媒 Board of Trustees, an amphitheater, the home for 200 Terra Cotta Warriors and other sculptures, and the renovation of Stewart Hall, which serves as the home for the arts and design program and two galleries.
